Is Menopause and IBS a Terrible Combination?

Is there any relation between IBS and Menopause? The first thing which you should know is that you have to diagnose that either you have IBS or Menopause? Complete end of menstruation cycles of a woman is called Menopause. Generally, a woman can start to face it from age of 45 to 58 years.  Due to Menopause, several changes may occur in the body. These changes may or may not trigger the symptoms of IBS.

Firstly, you should learn about IBS and Menopause separately. IBS is an irregular movement habit of Bowel while Menopause is complete ending of menstruation cycles in a woman at a certain age. In next discussion, “how menopause affects the IBS Symptoms” will discuss.

IBS after Menopause

It is not clear that IBS after Menopause improves or worsens more. It varies from one woman to the next. Conditions of Irritable Bowel Syndrome’s Symptoms worsen or improve according to the changing in bowel movement due to menopause. Some studies suggested that symptoms of IBS reduce after menopause while other negates this.

IBS and Hormones Menopause

There are two types of sex hormones present in a woman

  • Estrogen
  • Progesterone

Reduction of these 2 types of hormones causes menopause. And these two hormones are also present in the digestive system. Due to changes in these hormones following symptoms may occur;

  • Frequent Bowel Movement
  • Bloating
  • Abdominal Pain
  • Discomfort in belly

Perimenopause and IBS

Perimenopause is the transitional period of a woman from fertility to the end of fertility. During this transitional period, a woman may face abdominal pain and belly discomfort in severity. Before a menopausal period of a female, chances of worsening of IBS symptoms are high due to declining numbers of hormone (Estrogen and Progesterone)

Menopause and Constipation IBS (C-IBS)

IBS may worsen the due to menopause in form of C-IBS. Due to leveling off of hormones (Estrogen and Progesterone), movement of intestinal muscles slows down. The slow movement of bowel leads towards constipation dominant Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Can Menopause cause IBS Symptoms?

There is two school of thoughts about this question.

  • According to one school of thought, IBS symptoms decrease after menopause. Shreds of evidence are provided to prove the statement in the following manner;

According to IFFDE survey, Women (Age 45 to 55) have fewer symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome while men do not have fewer symptoms at the same age.

  • 2nd school of thought proves that Menopause increases the symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome. According to them, changes in sex hormones affect digestive system of a woman which worsens the IBS symptoms more.
